Kate NV（ケイト・エンヴィー）は、モスクワの電子音楽家、Kate Shilonosova（ケイト・シロノソヴァ）によるソロ・プロジェクト。2013年にデビュー・EPとなる『Pink Jungle』をリリースし、翌2014年には、東京で開催された「Red Bull Music Academy Tokyo」に参加。カラオケ館新宿店で行われたプログラム「Lost In Karaoke」に出演し、初来日公演を行なっている。2016年には、〈Orange Milk〉よりファースト・アルバム『Binasu』を発表。そして今年、ニューヨークのレーベル〈RVNG Intl.〉と契約し、6月に〈RVNG Intl. / PLANCHA〉より、最新アルバムとなる『для FOR』をリリースしている。

　アルバムのリリースに合わせて、およそ4年ぶりの来日公演となる、大阪、東京、新潟の3都市、4公演のジャパン・ツアー「KATE NV JAPAN TOUR 2018」の開催が決定。ツアー直前の彼女に、新作を中心としたメール・インタビューを行った。

＿＿2016年にリリースされたファースト・ソロ・アルバム『Binasu』の〈Orange Milk〉のカセット盤（CDは〈PLANCHA〉から日本のみでリリース）は2度の追加プレスが行われるなど、日本でも話題になりましたが、前作への評価は、その後の活動や制作にどのような変化や影響をもたらしましたか。

評判とかそういうものが影響することはないと思う。私はただ音楽を作ろうとしてるから。私のたった一つのゴールは自分自身に素直になること。そして、もし今ポップな作品が作れないとしたら、無理に自分に作らせようとは思わない。

＿＿最新作『для FOR』が、〈RVNG Intl.〉からのリリースに至った経緯を教えてください。

RVNG Intl.のMattに『Peaceful Protest』というコンピレーションに数曲書いてくれないかって一度頼まれたのがきっかけ。こういう雰囲気の曲を書くのはとても楽しかったし、彼らも曲を増やして、しっかりとした作品にしようって提案してくれた──つまりアルバムをね 🙂 。

実は、Mattが提案してくれた時には、『Binasu』のようなたくさんの歌が入ったセカンド・アルバムの制作をしていたんだけど。そして、今回のアルバムが完成した。今回の曲はすごく自然に生まれたものだったから、流れに身を任せた感じだった。

＿＿今作『для FOR』は、前作『Binasu』と比べて、より抽象的なアンビエントミュージックに接近していますが、どのようなテーマで制作を行ったのでしょうか。

ずっとこういうアルバムを作りたいと思っていたんだけど、こんなにすぐになるなんて考えてもいなかった。私にとって、このアルバムは、その人自身にあるハーモニーや、人とその周りの空間にあるハーモニーを探していくことがテーマ。それは孤独でもあるけど、本質でもあり、自立しているということでもある。あなたが幸せであるとき、その瞬間はあなた自身であるということ。このアルバムは日常や繰り返す日々との対話みたいなもので、そこで私はずっと毎日、新しい何かに気づこうとしたり、小さくて単純なものに触れようとしたりしている。

ある意味このアルバムは、あなたが今この瞬間ここにいることに感謝することについてのものとも言える。モスクワの陽の入る小さな私の部屋でレコーディングをしているその瞬間に私がどう感じたかということを表現したものでもある。

＿＿プレスリリースで、あなたが今作で影響を受けたアーティストとして、ミニマル音楽家のPier MilesやコンポーザーのAnn Southam、吉村弘を挙げています。彼らの音楽のどの点に惹かれたのでしょうか。

実際、この作品は吉村弘と高田みどりに特別な影響を受けている。私はいつも、彼らが物語や旅を作っていくのがとても好きで、それはただ曲が収録されたアルバム以上のものに見える。だから私も、物語のような、確かな何かを作りたいと思った。

＿＿また同じくプレスリリースによれば、今作はあなたが暮らすモスクワでの日常が題材のひとつになっているとのことですが、どうして生活の身近なものに目を向けるようになったのでしょうか。例えば、あなた自身ではなく、まるであなたの椅子が作曲したような音楽とはどのような意味でしょうか。

とってもいい質問 🙂 。毎日は変哲のないものだけど、それと同時に、その一日は毎日違うもの。すべてが常に変化していて、あなたも変わり、時間は流れ、同じ場所に留まり続けるものなんてないと思う。

私が椅子について話していたとき、あなた自身の音楽が離れていくような奇妙な意識のことを説明しようとしていた。音楽が自ら勝手に生まれてきたら、あなたがするべきことは、どうにかそれを録音することになる。つまり、あなたは、楽器やそれを録音する者になるということ。

＿＿「дуб OAK」のMVは、グリッチ加工された映像から微かに人間らしき姿が見えるような作品になっています。この映像は何をテーマとしているのでしょうか。

私とこのビデオの監督は日々の習慣とViktor Pivovarovの「the projects for the lonely person」という作品から強いインスピレーションを得た。私たちにとって今回のビデオはみんなに馴染みのある日々の現実についての物語。でも同時に、グリッチ加工があることで何か不穏なものも共存させている。時々映像が歪みすぎてて、ほとんど見えない部分もある。

私個人としては、毎日していることに目を向ける重要性も表現していると思う。そうすることで、一見似たようなものだけど、日々に違いを見つけられるって私は思ってる。

＿＿また今回、アルバムタイトルやトラック名に、ソロ作では初めてロシア語が使用されましたが、特別な意図はあったのでしょうか。

単純に、ぞれぞれの曲の間に関係性を作り上げたいと思ってた。だって歌は入っていないし、言葉によるテーマが見つからないしね。

この変わった方法は曲達を視覚的に繋げるにはとてもいいと思った。それぞれの曲に名前があるのだけど、二つの言語の三文字で成立しているから、目で見える関係性があって、それが曲達を均等にならしてくれてる。

＿＿〈PLANCHA〉からの国内盤限定のボーナス・トラックには、食品まつりa.k.a foodmanがリミックスで参加しています。彼のクリエイションに関して共感する部分はあるとすれば、どのような点でしょうか。

Foodmanは大好き！　彼は最高！　そして彼のリミックスも本当に大好き！　聴いていて、とてもドキドキしたし、彼がどんな風にアレンジしてくれるかは想像していたけど、全然思っていたものと違った！　彼のヴァージョンは、私にとって、全く新鮮なもの。彼のリミックス方法は予測不可能で、聞きながら笑ってしまうほどだった。まるでフリージャズみたいで本当に素晴らしい。Foodmanは、やりたいことは何でもやるような、まともなルールに縛られない人だったから、私はとってもうれしい。

彼が手がけてくれたヴァージョンは陽気な雰囲気で満たされていて、まるで直感で感じたことをそのまま落とし込んだみたい。本当に大好きだし、これこそ真の自由だと思う。

＿＿7月に、東京、大阪、新潟での全4公演となるジャパン・ツアーを控えています。初めての日本でのソロ・ツアーとなりますが、どのようなライブセットを予定していますか。

ポップなものも、アンビエントも、そのどちらの要素を取り入れたものもするつもり。けどまだどうなるかは考え中。私が今回の新曲を披露するときは、即興演奏になるから、ゼロから一曲を生み出すのに延々と時間がかかることもある。だから、私の普段のプログラムとの兼ね合いも少し大変になる。ポップの曲を演奏しているときに、何とかしないといけない予測不能のタイムスケジュールがあるようなものだから。

Your first solo album ”Binasu” from Orange Milk in 2016 was pressed twice and became popular in Japan. How did the reputation for it influence and change your later creation?

i don’t think that those kind of things can really have an influence on me. i’m just trying to make music. the only goal i have―i’m trying to be honest with myself and if i can’t make a pop record now, then i won’t force myself to write pop tracks.

How did the release of your new album “для FOR” from RVNG Intl. happen?

Matt from RVNG once asked me to make few tracks for the “peaceful protest” compilation. I really enjoyed making tracks like this and guys suggested me to make an extended version and to turn it to a solid work―an album 🙂

actually i was already working on my second binasu-a-like (i mean with lots of songs) album when Matt suggested me to make an extended version and finish the album. these tracks happened so naturally that i just couldn’t resist.

Comparing to “BINASU”, “для FOR” is much closer to ambient music. Could you tell us about the theme of this album?

i’ve always wanted to make an album like this, but never though that this would happen so soon.

for me, my album is about finding harmony in yourself and harmony between yourself and the space that surrounds you. it is loneliness, but it’s kind and self-sufficient. when you are happy just being the way you are at the moment.

the album is like a dialogue with everyday and routine life, where I’m trying to notice something new and touching in small and simple things every day.
in some way, this album is about being thankful for what you have right here and right now. it’s a reflection of how I felt at that moment of recording those tracks in my small sunny room in moscow.

In the press release, you named Piero Miles, Ann Southam and Hiroshi Yoshimura as the artists you have been influence by in making this album. Which points have you been inspired by their works?

actually this record specifically is inspired by Yoshimura and Midori Takada. i always love the way they created a story, a journey. something more than just an LP with tracks.
so that’s why i also wanted to create a story, something solid.

Also, according to the press release, your ordinary days in Moscow is one of the subject of this album. Why do you pay attention to something around your life? For example, what does the music written by your chair not by yourself mean?

its a very nice question 🙂 all days are ordinary, but at the same time every day is different. everything changes all the time ― you change, time flows, nothing stays in the same position.

when i was talking about the chair i was trying to explain this weird feeling of being detached from your own music. When music happens by itself and the only task you have is to record it somehow. so you also become an instrument, an executor.

In the music video “дуб OAK”, we can see something like a human slightly in this glitch image. What is the concept of the video?

me and director of this video were really inspired by daily routine and Viktor Pivovarov’s work called “the projects for the lonely person”. for us it’s like a story about reality that is very familiar to everyone but at the same time there is something disturbing in it―this glitch. sometimes the picture is warped really hard, sometimes its barely noticeable.
for me this video is also about being very conscious about what you doing everyday and every minute so you could find the difference between the days even if they seem to be very similar at first glance.

You used Russian in the titles of this album and tracks at the first time in solo works. Were there any especial meanings?

i just wanted to add another layer of connection between the tracks since i do not have songs on the record and the verbal theme is missing.
i thought it would be great to connect them visually, make them equal in this weird way―every track has its own name but they are all visually connected because of using 3 letter words in 2 languages.

The version of “дуб OAK” remixed by foodman is included as a bonus track in this album from PLANCHA. If you have some sympathies in his creation, please tell us the points.

i LOVE foodman, he is the best! And i really LOVE this remix! i was excited to hear it and i thought that i can predict what he could do with the track, but it turned to be completely different from what i imagined in my head! for me his version is like a breath of a fresh air. they way he composed it was so unexpected for me, that i laughed a lot while listening, its almost like a free jazz thing and omg i’m so glad that foodman is the person who’s not afraid to try whatever he wants and seems that he doesn’t follow proper rules.
there’s so much lightness in his version as if he did the first thing that came into his mind―i really love it, thats the real freedom.

You are going to hold your first Japan tour including four shows in Tokyo, Osaka and Niigata in the middle of July. What kinds of live performance are you planning?

i’m going to do pop performances, ambient concerts and half pop-half ambient ones. still thinking of how its going to be like, cause when i perform my new tracks―i play improvisations, sometimes it can take forever to create even one track from the scratch so it would be a bit hard to mix it with my regular program cause when you play pop tracks you have this invisible time schedule that you have to deal with.
