[Interview]Salamanda – “ashbalkum”

How did you start making music together as Salamanda?

We first met each other in the summer of 2018 when we both were in the middle of getting used to DJing and producing electronic music, and started releasing music as Salamanda from early 2019. After a couple of meals together and hanging out at clubs, we discovered that we share similar music tastes and viewpoints towards so many things. That’s how we decided to start this Salamanda project to make music that we love, just to have fun, and it has never been not fun ever since.

What was the inspiration for your band name, how was it created, and why?

The name Salamanda came from Sala’s random drawing of a salamander on Manda’s diary. We not only liked how it’s pronounced but also the fact that salamanders are real creatures with interesting myths surrounding them. So we named it Salamanda to make it sound more like a proper name, and then began introducing ourselves as Sala (Uman Therma) and Manda (Yetsuby).

Your latest release, “ashbalkum,” is on the New York label Human Pitch. How did you come to sign with Human Pitch?

We’ve been huge fans of Human Pitch artists and records that they put out, so we were very happy and excited when they reached out to us. Working with Erin and Brandon, who also go by the name Tristan Arp and Simisea, respectively, has always been fun and delightful! It feels like a blessing every time we get to connect and build friendships with such talented, warm-hearted friends from around the world.

What is the theme of “ashbalkum”?

“Ashbalkum” is about a story of a man who falls asleep inside the bathtub – a realm of dreams – and dreams of fun and colorful dreams. Like how dreams can be very random, mysterious and mischievous, we wanted this album to be filled with Salamanda-colored tracks with diversified rhythms and moods.

The song “Overdose,” also a single, features a dreamy worldview composed of dub and ambient elements. What was the inspiration for this song?

For “Overdose,” we imagined an underwater world inside the bathtub with colorful, lukewarm, sparkling water where hypnotic callings of the Sirens and unknown voices resonate endlessly.

The sampling of voices in “Catching Tails” is particularly impressive. What do you think is the significance of the human voice in music?

We find human voice very powerful in that it’s an instrument that is relatively easy to control, yet it can create so many different textures, colors and harmonies. With or without the lyrics, human voice also has great power to comfort, move one’s heart or to bring out certain feelings like nostalgia. Because of this reason, it’s always fun to play with vocal samples or our own vocals when working on songs.

What is the significance of the snake motif in the artwork for this album and the music video for “Melting Hazard”?

The album artwork and the art piece is made by Zin Taylor who’s been working with Human Pitch. We love how his wiggly and snakey sculpture works nicely with the album concept and mood.

Could you tell us if there are some artists in the Korean electronic music scene that you are keeping an eye on?

While there are so many talented artists in this scene, these days we’ve been keeping our eyes on one of the talented friends of ours “remji thunder” whose debut EP is coming out this October.

Please tell us more about the Computer Music Club project you launched with Yeong Die?

Computer Music Club is a project that we started with our friend Yeong Die in early 2021, in an effort to cheer up ourselves and all the music lovers out there during the pandemic. Since we wanted to do something fun, witty and creative, this project has been a great outlet for us to create and share tracks that are dedicated to the dancefloor, along with computer memes and impressive artworks.

You have announced that you will perform at the “FESTIVAL de FRUE 2022” in November. What kind of performance are you planning?

We’re super excited to announce that we will be performing both Live and DJ set at the “FESTIVAL de FRUE 2022” this November! It’s going to be our first time performing in Japan, so this festival already means a lot to us. We’re planning to showcase some of our unreleased tracks plus some new versions of our old songs.

Do you have any plans for your next project or album for 2023?

New exciting projects and releases will be coming up in 2023, but for now, it’s a secret! Please keep your eyes peeled 🙂
