　カナダ、モントリオールを拠点とする音楽家、Tess Roby。彼女は写真家としても、自身と親交の深い、TOPSやCFCF、Helena Delandなどの写真を手がけ、2018年には、〈Italians Do It Better〉よりファーストアルバム『Beacon』をリリースしている。そして今年4月には、セカンドアルバム『Ideas of Space』を発表。今回、新たに設立したレーベル〈SSURROUNDSS〉からリリースされた、美しく、壮厳な世界が広がる新作について、その詳細を語ってもらった。

＿＿先月開催された、Men I Trustのモントリオール、トロントでのツアーに参加していますね。ツアーはいかがでしたか。

これらの公演は2020年の3月に行われる予定だったのですが、今回まで5回もスケジュールが変更されました。ただ、結果として、私のアルバムのリリースと同時期に開催できたことはとても驚きですね。ライブを観てくれた人たちは、私の音楽を受け入れてくれたので、公演が終わったあと、何日も気分が高揚していました。Men I Trustも、毎回すばらしいライブを見せてくれる魅力的なバンドです。間違いなく、私のお気に入りのバンドの一つですね。

＿＿これまでの作品は〈Italians Do It Better〉から、そして今作より、自身のレーベル〈SSURROUNDSS〉からのリリースとなっています。新たにレーベルを設立した経緯やレーベル名の意味などについて教えてください。

〈SSURROUNDSS〉を始めたのは、自分の音楽を完全にコントロールし、作品をリリースするためのビジネスについてもっと学びたいと思ったからです。これは、サラウンドサウンドの略で、若いころの自分の音楽を表現したものです。このレーベルは、私のクリエイティブ・プロジェクトのためのホームであり、ほかのアーティスト、特にエレクトロニック・ミュージックで活躍する女性のアーティストたちの作品もリリースしていきたいと考えています。

＿＿大学では写真を学び、その後写真集を出版するなど、写真家としても活動していますが、制作において、写真が音楽に与える影響、または、音楽が写真に与える影響などはありますか。また、TOPSやCFCFのアーティスト写真も手がけていますが、こうしたポートレートを撮影する際、写真家としてどのような点を重視していますか。

私は物事をとても視覚的に捉えます。そして、想像力が豊かなんです。曲作りのときも、すぐにイメージが湧いてきます。 シンセサイザーで曲を作るのですが、音色やパッチには独特の特徴があるので、とてもうまくいきます。こうしたイメージは、リリックにもインスピレーションを与えてくれます。風景や特定のシンボルを思い浮かべることが多いですね。ある意味、私の音楽と写真はこのようにつながっているのだと思います。音楽も写真も、私の世界に対する見方や想像の仕方から生まれたものなのです。

そうなんです！　これまで、TOPS、CFCF、The Weather Station、Gayance、Sean Nicholas Savage、Helena Delandなどのアーティスト写真を撮影しています。私が撮影するアーティストの多くは、私の友人でもあります。お互いの経験を共有することで、より親密なつながりを持つことができ、それらが写真にも現れているのだと思います。撮影のときは、アーティストが心地よく思えるように、そして彼らのありのままの姿を撮影できるように心がけています。プレス用のアーティスト写真は、彼らを視覚的に表現するものなので、このようなかたちでアーティストとコラボレーションができることを光栄に思います。

＿＿『Ideas of Space』について聞かせてください。本作では多くのコラボレーターが楽曲に参加し、さまざまな楽器の音色が複雑に交わっていますが、制作にあたり、どのような世界観を表現しようとしたのでしょうか。

このアルバムは、とてもパーソナルな作品になっています。多くの曲は、トラウマや生きた経験から得られる、癒しや成長から生まれています。心／体、夢／現実、物理／非物理を暗示する隠喩的な空間（部屋、家）についての言及が数多くあります。私は直感的に文章を書くことが多いので、これらのテーマや気づきは、リリースに先立ってこの作品について書き始めたここ数か月で初めて表面化したものです。

＿＿過去のインタビューでは、読んでいる本からインスピレーションを受けることがあると回答していましたが、今回のアルバム制作において、何かインスピレーションを受けたものがあれば教えてください。

パンデミックの期間中もアルバムの制作を続け、多くの曲は自宅のスタジオで書き上げました。私にとって大切なものすべてが置かれた、とても小さな部屋です。ドアを閉めれば、完全に安心して、一人で考え事をすることができます。この部屋は、私の心、そしてその状態を表していると考えています。そこで思考したことが、アルバムの多くの曲の土台になりました。また、夢や暗闇、夜の時間からも深いインスピレーションを受けています。

＿＿タイトル曲でもある「Ideas of Space」は、あなた自身が監督を務めたミュージックビデオも発表されていますが、この映像について詳しく教えてください。また、映像の制作はどのようなプロセスや考えで取り組んでいますか。

「Ideas of Space」は、私が今まで作ったもののなかで最も壮大な映像です。ほぼ1年をかけてコンセプトや企画を練り、強い絆の仲間たちと一緒に作り上げました。撮影と編集には、VideoCompanyのPatrick BoivinとGeorge Allisterが、プロデュースにはSarah Mackenzieが携わっています。映像のなかには、二人の私がいます。一人は長い旅をしていて、崖や野原を歩いています。もう一人は、夜、ストーンサークルの中心で踊りながら待っています。やがて、二人はストーンサークルの中心で出会い、抱き合います。これは、自分自身を見つけること、そして内なる力を認識することのメタファーなんです。

＿＿「Path」に関して、プレスリリースには、2019年に撮影された映像が曲作りに影響を与えたという趣旨のコメントがありましたが、詳しく教えてください。

Hugo Bernierと私は、「Path」に登場する16mmの映像を2019年に撮影しました。とても美しく、まっすぐな映像で、私たちはこの映像を使って何かしたいとずっと考えていたんです。そして、この映像は、私の人生を永遠に変えてしまうようなことが起こる数日前に撮影されたものです。2021年の1月にアルバムの曲作りをしていたとき、この映像のなかの自分を見て、当時の私は今とまったく違う人間だったことに気がつきました。これから起こる苦難について自分に警告できれば、と思いましたね。

＿＿あなたが作る写真、音楽、映像には、独特の美しさがありますが、すべての作品に共通する表現のテーマなどがあれば教えてください。

ありがとうございます。私の作品はとても正直であることが、その根底にあると思います。私が表現するあらゆる側面は、想像力の深い場所、そして世界を探求し、違った方法で見てみたいという意志から生まれています。私が作り出す音楽や、写真や映像といった作品には、ぬくもりがあると信じています。これからも、人々とつながり、必要なときには、美しさを抱かせるような作品を作り続けていきたいと思っています。

＿＿今後の活動予定について教えてください。

私のアルバムが、トロントとモントリオールでもまもなくリリースされます。また、今年の夏にはカナダのいくつかのイベントに出演する予定です。私が参加しているバンド、Dawn to Dawnのデビューアルバムも今年の後半にリリースされる予定なので、新しい楽曲を制作している最中です。来年の春には、日本でもツアーをしたいですね。日本で演奏することが夢なので、実現できるよう願っています。

You opened for Men I Trust in Montreal and Toronto last month. How were the shows?  

These shows were supposed to happen in March 2020 and were rescheduled 5 times – to have them finally happen at the perfect time around the release of my album was amazing. The audiences were so receptive to my music and I was on a high for days after playing. Men I Trust are also an amazing band to watch night after night – one of my favorite bands for sure. 

Your previous works have been released on “Italians Do It Better,” You are now releasing your new pieces on your label, “SSURROUNDSS.” How did you establish the new music label, and what is the meaning of the label name?

I wanted to have full control over my music and learn more about the business behind releasing records so I started SSURROUNDSS. It stands for surround sounds, which is how I would describe my music when I was younger. This label will be a home for my creative projects, and I hope to release other artists as well– especially women working in electronic music.

You studied photography in college and have since published a book of photographs. In your production, how does photography influence music, or how does music influence photography? And then, you do artist photos for TOPS and CFCF. What do you focus on as a photographer when shooting these portraits?

I am a very visual person, and have a vivid imagination. When I write songs, imagery starts to appear very quickly. I write on synthesizer, which works well for this, as certain tones and patches have such distinct qualities. This imagery can inspire the lyrics – I’m often visualizing a landscape or specific symbol. In a way I believe this is how my music and photography connect, they both come from my way of seeing and imagining the world differently.

And yes! I’ve made photographs with TOPS, CFCF, The Weather Station, Gayance, Sean Nicholas Savage, and Helena Deland, to name a few. Many artists I photograph are friends, and we have shared experiences which allow for deeper connection, which I find comes through in the images. I’m always focused on making the artist feel comfortable and in their element when we’re shooting. Press photos are the way that artists visually represent themselves, so I’m honored when people ask me to collaborate in this way.  

Could you tell us about “Ideas of Space?” What worldview did you try to express in creating this work, in which many collaborators participated in the music, and the tones of various instruments are intricately intertwined?

This is quite a personal record, with many of the songs coming from a place of wanting to heal and grow from trauma and lived experience. There are many references to spaces (rooms, houses) which are metaphorical, alluding to mind/body, dream/reality, physical/non-physical.  I write very intuitively, and these themes and realizations only surfaced in the last few months when I began to write about the record ahead of its release.

In past interviews, you have said that you are sometimes inspired by the books you read. What were some of your inspirations in the making of this album?

I was working on this record throughout the pandemic and many of the songs were written in my home studio. This room is quite small, and is home to everything that is most precious to me. When I close the door, I have the ability to feel completely safe and alone with my thoughts. I look at this room as a representation of my mind, and the state that it’s in. These thoughts were the building blocks for many of the songs on the album. I’m also deeply inspired by my dreams and by darkness/night time.

The title track ‘Ideas of Spaces’ also has a music video that you directed yourself. Could you tell us more about it?

Ideas of Space is the most ambitious video I’ve ever made. I worked on the concept and planning for almost a year, and worked with a small, tight-knit team of friends to create it: the video was shot & edited by Patrick Boivin & George Allister (VideoCompany), and produced by Sarah Mackenzie.

In the video, there are two of me; one on a long journey, walking across cliffs and fields. The other dances in the middle of a stone circle at night, waiting. Eventually, they meet in the middle of the stone circle and embrace. It is a metaphor for finding one’s self, and recognizing the power within.

Regarded to ‘Path,’ there was a comment in the press release that the footage shot taken in 2019 influenced the songwriting. Could you elaborate?

Hugo Bernier & I shot the 16mm footage featured in the ‘Path’ video in 2019. I found the footage very beautiful and honest– we always knew we wanted to do something with it. This footage was shot days before something happened that would change my life forever. When I was writing for the album in January 2021 I had the footage with me, and I was looking at myself in this footage, knowing that I was a very different person then, and wishing I could warn myself of the hardships to come.

The photographs, music, and films you create have an original beauty, and is there a common theme of expression that runs through all your work?

Thank you! At the heart of it, I think my work is very honest. Every aspect of what I do comes from a deep place of imagination, and the will to explore and see the world in a different way. I believe there’s a warmth that runs throughout my music and visual work. I want to continue to create work that can connect with people, and hold beauty for them in times of need.

Finally, would you tell us about your following plans?

My album launches are happening very soon in Toronto & Montreal, and I will play some festivals in Canada this summer. My band Dawn to Dawn’s debut album will come out later this year, and I am working on new music too. I’m hoping to tour Japan next Spring. It is my dream to play there, so I hope it comes true!
