Tanukichan（タヌキチャン）は、アメリカ、カリフォルニア州オークランドを中心に活動するSSW／マルチインストゥルメンタリスト、Hannah van Loon（ハンナ・ヴァン・ルーン）によるソロ・プロジェクト。TanukichanことHannahは、オークランドのインディ・ポップ・バンド、Trails and Waysのメンバーとして活躍したのち、Tanukichanとして活動を開始。2016年には、Toro Y MoiことChaz Bundick主宰のレーベル〈Company Records〉からEP『Radiolove』をリリースしている。そして今年7月、同レーベルから、Chazと共同プロデュースとなるファースト・アルバム『Sundays』をリリース。また、同作の国内盤は〈Hostess〉から8月にリリースされている。

　現在Tanukichanは、初のヘッドライン・ツアーを終え、10月からは、Kero Kero Bonitoのツアーにオープニング・アクトとして参加することが決定している。新作をリリースしたばかりの彼女に、そのユニークなプロジェクト名や経歴、新作『Sundays』の制作過程などについて話を聞いてみた。

＿＿はじめに、アーティスト名の由来について教えてください。

私はいつもボーイッシュで、男性的な活動に魅力を感じてきた。神話に登場するタヌキは、とても大きな睾丸を持っていて、好き勝手に行動する。でも現実のタヌキは、とてもかわいらしい動物だから、私にぴったりだと思った。

＿＿元々Trails and Waysというバンドのメンバーとして活動されていましたが、ソロ・プロジェクトを始めようと思ったきっかけについて教えてください。

Trails and Waysの活動にはとても力を入れていたんだけど、ある時このバンドにいる間は自分のクリエイティブな欲求を満たすことができないと感じた。それで、自分のプロジェクトを始めることにした。

＿＿ファースト・アルバム『Sundays』は、Toro Y MoiことChaz Bearが主宰するレーベル 〈Company Records〉からのリリースですが、その経緯を教えてください。

Chazとは共通の友人を通して知り合って、彼が私のライブを見てEPの制作を手伝うことを申し出てくれた。そのEP『Radiolove』は、私のファースト・EPで、これも〈Company Records〉からリリースされたもの。私たちはお互いにその仕上がりが気に入ったから、『Sundays』というフル・レングスのアルバムを制作しようと決めた。

＿＿アルバムのタイトルに“Sundays”と名付けたのはなぜですか。

“Sundays”は収録曲タイトルの一つで、アルバムのフィーリングとそれが私にどんな意味をもたらしているかを様々な方法で捉えていた。それで、アルバムのタイトルにしようと決めた。

＿＿Chaz Bearは今作の共同プロデューサーを務めていますが、彼の存在はアルバムにどんな影響をもたらしましたか。

Chazがいたことによって、サウンドがより洗練されたものに仕上がったし、私がデモを録音したときにはなかった、音の一体感が現れた。それに彼は、このアルバムでたくさん演奏しているから、多くのフィーリングやトーンが彼と作業した結果として表れている。彼は制作しているとき、音作りに夢中になっていて、それを見れたのはとても良い経験だった。

＿＿アルバム収録曲の「Lazy Love」のMVは、Toro Y Moi（Chaz Bear）のクリエイティブ・パートナーでもあるBrendan Nakaharaとの共作だそうですが、MVのテーマや制作プロセスについて教えてください。

このMVは、小旅行や、その曲が私にとってどういう意味を持っているかを反映させた興味深いビジュアルがテーマになっている。ちょっとした孤独感や、サイケデリア、思いにふけっているような感じ。Brendanと仕事をするのはいつも最高で、私が何かアイデアを思いついて彼に投げると、彼は私の求めていることをどうやって実行するかについて助言をくれる。彼はこのMVの撮影と色彩も手がけている。

＿＿また、『The FADER』で、「Lazy Love」について「本当に大切なことになると、自分の在り方に対して固まってしまい、無力さを感じてしまう。そういった瞬間の感情を捉えたかった」と述べていますが、楽曲のコンセプトについて教えてください。

愛は最も大切なことだと思うんだけど、愛に対して、いったい私たち自身は何ができるのかっていうのがコンセプトかな。

＿＿米オークランドを拠点に活動していますが、ベイエリアでのバンド活動や音楽カルチャーがアルバムのサウンドに影響を与えていますか。もし与えているとしたらそれは、具体的にどのようなものでしょうか。

このアルバムはカリフォルニアっぽいサウンドって言われている。そこには一年中たゆみない輝きみたいなものがあって、それが音楽を通して現れているのかもしれない。

＿＿カリフォルニア大学バークレー校在学時には数学を専攻し、現在は大工として働いているそうですが、これらの経験は自身の音楽活動に何か影響を与えていますか。

それらの経験は間違いなく私の世界の捉え方を変えてくれた。数学は特にね。私は抽象的なものや、情報を分析していって中心となるアイデアに持っていくのが好きだから、私の書く歌詞は曖昧なものになることが多い。

＿＿最後にアルバムリリース後の予定を教えてください。

ツアーかな！　ちょうど自分の初めてのヘッドライン・ツアーを終えたところで、今度は秋から始まるKero Kero BonitoのUSツアーに参加する予定。日本にもいつか行ってみたい！

Tanuki is a type of Japanese raccoon. What was the inspiration for your band name/how was it created and why?

I’ve always been a tomboy, and drawn to male dominated activities. The mythological tank has really big balls and does as it pleases. In real life though, it’s a pretty cute animal so that felt appropriate to me. 

You are originally from a band called Trails and Ways. What lead you to start your own solo project?

Trails and Ways was a big time commitment and at a certain point I felt I wasn’t able to fulfill my own creative desire while being in the band so I decided to create my own project. 

Your first album “Sundays” was released on which is founded by Chaz Bear aka Toro Y Moi. How did this come about?

I met chaz through mutual friends and he saw me play a show and offering to help me record an EP. That was the first EP Radiolove that was also put out on Company. I think we both liked the result so decided to do a full length together which was Sundays. 

Where did the album’s title “Sundays” come from?

Sundays is one of the track titles, and it encapsulates how the album feels and what it means to me in various ways, so I decided to use it for the Album title.

Chaz also co-wrote and produced the album. What do you think he brought to the final product? Is there anything you learned from working with him?

He brought a polished sound, and sonic cohesion that wasn’t there when I had recorded the demos. He also played a lot on the album so a lot of the feel and tones are a result of working with him. He is very immersed in the process as he works and that is cool to see.

You worked with Toro Y Moi’s creative partner, Brendan Nakahara, for your music video for ‘Lazy Love”. Could you tell us the theme of the music video and what the creative process was like?

The “theme” of the video is interesting visuals that are a little trip, and reflect what the song means to me. some loneliness, some psychedelia, being lost in thought. Working with Brendan is always great, I would come up with ideas and bounce them off him, he’d give me pointers on how to execute what I wanted. He also shot and did color for the video. 

During the FADER’s interview about Lazy Love, you said “when it comes to things I really care about, I can feel immobilized or helplessness about the way that I am. I wanted the song to capture the feeling of those moments”. Could you tell us more about the concept of the song?

I think love is the most important thing, but what can you do about love?

You are based in Oakland. Do you think your band experiences or the music culture from the Bay Area have influenced on the sound of the album in any way? If so, how?

People say the album sounds like California. I guess there is a kind of unrelenting sunniness throughout the year, maybe that comes through in the music.

I’ve heard that your major at UC Berkeley was math and now you work as a carpenter. Have these experiences influenced on your music or who you are as an artist?

They definitely inform the way I see the world, especially math. I think my lyrics can be so vague because I appreciate abstraction and distilling information into a core idea. 

Finally, what are you up to after this release? What’s next?

Touring! I just did my first headlining tour and will be joining Kero Kero Bonito on a US tour in the fall. I’d love to make it to Japan someday!
