Rhyeは、LAを拠点に活動するMichael Milosh（マイケル・ミロシュ）が率いるバンド。2013年にデビュー・アルバム『Woman』をリリースし、その匿名性の高さとフロントマンを務めるMichael Miloshの甘美で繊細な歌声が注目を集めた。

そして今月、約4年ぶりとなるセカンド・アルバム『Blood』が、〈Loma Vista Recordings / Hostess〉よりリリースされた。人間の持つ親密さを表現したかったという今作についてMiloshは、「毎晩毎晩、オーディエンスの前で無防備な状態になることはとても勇気がいるんだけど、それと同じ勇気を今作の一曲一曲で使っている」と語っている。

新作のリリースに合わせ、5月に単独来日ツアーが開催されることも発表され、来日への期待も高まる中、ヴォーカルのMiloshに新作について話を聞くことができた。

___Rhyeを結成することになったきっかけについて教えてください。

Rhyeは元々QuadronのRobinと当時結成したんだけど、音楽のアイデアをメールでやり取りしているうちに始まったプロジェクトなんだ。それが自然と『Woman』へと発展したんだけど、それは当時本当に自然な流れだった。

___最新アルバム『Blood』について、そのタイトルの意味を教えてください。

『Blood』は僕にとってたくさんの意味があるんだけど、心臓の源っていうのが多分一番わかりやすい答えかな。それは命であり、起源であり……全てなんだ。

___ファースト・アルバム『Woman』が、ベッドルーム・プロジェクトであったことに対し、『Blood』は、ライブやパフォーマンスから生まれたとのことですが、今作の制作プロセスについて、より具体的に教えてください。

僕にとって『Blood』は、『Woman』で世界中をバンドと一緒に何年もツアーした経験から生まれたもの。今回のアルバムは、音楽ライブの環境の中で作ったし、僕が楽曲制作に取り掛かっていた時の場所が反映されているってことなんだ。今作が全てライブ・レコーディングで制作されたっていうのは僕にとって大切なことで、楽曲もより進化させることができた気がする。

___「Please」のリリース時に、「Rhyeがこれから向かっていく場所への試金石になるもの」というコメントを発表していますが、その意図についてより詳しく教えてください。

多分「Sinful」っていう曲の話をしてた時にそうやって言ったと思うんだけど、付き合っていくうちに関係が発展して次のチャプターに進む上での試金石って意味だったんだ。カップルとして関係を深めていくことは、とても脆い状況に置かれるということ。お互い、自分の心に本当に正直でいなきゃいけないからね。

___「Please」のMVはご自身が監督を務めていますが、MVのテーマについて教えてください。

「Please」はアルバムの中でも特にパーソナルな曲で、MVにもそれを反映させたかった。「Please」は、弁解として書いたものなんだ。僕は頑固な性格だから、なかなか自分から謝ることができないんだけど、MVでは、その内面の葛藤がダンスで表現されている。

___Rooseveltによるリミックス「Summer Days (Roosevelt Remix)」のMVは、フォトブースの中で人々が撮影する様子が映し出されていますが、このMVのテーマについて詳しく教えてください。

「Summer Days」のMVは、ベルリンで夏を過ごした経験と、その時の街と人々の自然な様子を反映させたアイデアから生まれたもの。ベルリンの冬は本当に寒くて、部屋にこもりがちになってしまうから、MVでは、夏の喜びやそれによって生まれる有意義な時間について表現したかった。

___「Taste」のMVは、DanceOnとのコラボレーション作品とのことですが、制作に至った経緯について教えてください。

コラボレーションとして、僕はDanceOnのことをダンサー達の間で名高いプラットフォームだとずっと思っていた。元々、DanceOnが僕のマネジメントに連絡をくれて、「Taste」のMVのコンセプトも考えてくれたんだけど。ちょうどその時「Please」のMVを撮ったばかりだったから、MVにダンサーを迎えるっていうのは本当に自然な流れに思えたんだ。

___これまでにリリースされた作品のアートワークは全て女性の裸体がモチーフとなっていますが、その理由について教えてください。

『Blood』のアートワークは、僕の彼女のGenevièveのもので、彼女と付き合ってから行った旅行中に撮影したんだ。『Blood』の多くは、僕の人生の新しいチャプターや、付き合っていく中で自分自身を探究すること、愛と共に生まれる脆さについて書かれている。

___Rhyeの楽曲は、女性をテーマにした作品が多く見られます。Rhyeというプロジェクトでは、女性をどのような視点で捉え、表現しようとしているのでしょうか。

全ての女性への愛なのかはわからないけど、僕個人の、一人の女性への愛、つまり僕の彼女への愛をテーマにしてるとは思う。音楽もアートワークもそうなんだけど、人生全般において、自分のやること全てに偽りがないようにしたくて、それは僕にとって、自分の人生の瞬間や時間、その進化を反映させるためにとても重要なことなんだ。

___2月1日のメキシコシティでの公演を皮切りにツアーの開催が発表されています。昨年のフジロックにも出演していますが、今回のアルバムリリースに合わせて来日の予定などはありますか。

うん！　今夏に向けて来日ツアーをやることを発表したばかりなんだけど、日本にまた戻ってくるのを本当に楽しみにしているよ。日本に戻ってきて、新しいアルバムをみんなに初めて披露するのが本当に楽しみだよ。

First of all, how did you guys form Rhye?

Rhye was originally formed with Robin from Quadron at the time, as it really just started as a project that began from trading ideas back and forth on music via email. And naturally just progressed into the ‘Woman album, which was a very organic process at the time.

Where did the title of your second album “Blood” come from?

Blood to me means many things, the source to one’s heart probably being the most straightforward answer. It’s life, it’s birth… blood is everything.

I’ve heard that “Blood” was born out of the live environment and is built for performance as opposed to your first album “Woman”, which was a bedroom project. Could you tell us the creative process for “Blood” in more detail?

Blood for me was built from the many years of touring the ‘Woman’ record all over the world with the band. We really allowed for this new record to sit in the live space of music, which was a reflection of where I was in writing the second album. It was important to me that the album was created entirely of live recordings, which felt like the music has evolved to.

About the song “Please”, Mike said it’s “the stepping stone to where we’re headed”. Could you explain it in more detail?

I think I was talking about ‘Sinful’ at the time being a stepping stone into the next chapter in a relationship. The progression of evolving as a couple is a very vulnerable space to be in, as you really have to be honest with one other emotionally.

I’ve heard that Mike directed the music video for “Please”. What is the concept of the video?

The song ‘Please’ was a very personal track off the record, and I wanted the video to reflect that. I wrote the track, almost as a pleading. As I often find it hard to apologize due to my own stubbornness, so for the video its almost this internal dance of that struggle.

You released Roosevelt remix of “Summer Days” accompanying the music video, which is about people taking photos in a photo booth. Could you tell us about the concept of the video?

The ‘Summer Days’ video was this idea that we had as a reflection of living in Berlin for the summer and the natural expression of the city and its people. Often times the winters are so cold, you’ll find yourself indoors and I really wanted to create a video that could express the joys of Summer and the meaningful moments that it often creates.

You collaborated with DanceOn for the music video of “Taste”. How did this collaboration happen?

As a collaboration, I have always found DanceOn to be a highly respected platform for dancers. Originally DanceOn approached my management and came up with this video concept, for ‘Taste’ which at the time we had already shot ‘Please’ so it felt like such a natural progression in including dancers.

All of your artwork you’ve chosen for your releases consists of images of a woman’s body, is there a reason for this?

The artwork for the new record, ‘Blood’ and album artwork is of my girlfriend Geneviève and our travels over the span of our relationship. A lot of this album is about a new chapter in my life, exploring yourself in relationships and the vulnerability that comes with love.

It seems like Rhye is a project based on the theme of your love for women. How do you capture the essence of a woman and what kind of perspectives or ideas of women do you try to illustrate on your project?

I am not sure that I would say love for women in general, though I would agree it’s my love for a woman, who happens to be my girlfriend. For my music, artwork, and just life in general it’s really important to me that everything I do is very genuine to reflect a moment or time in my life or the evolution of that space.

You came to Japan for Fuji Rock last year and you have revealed new tour dates set for early 2018 which begin on February 1st in Mexico city as you release your new album “Blood”. Do you have any plans to visit Japan for this release?

Yes! I am very much looking forward to coming back to Japan as we just announced a few shows for this summer. So, we will be back to share the new album for the first time which I am excited to experience with you.
