ウェスト・ロンドン出身のシンガー・ソングライター、AMA。シングル「Monochrome」でデビューした弱冠19歳の彼女は、スタイリッシュなR&Bサウンドやモードを強調したミュージックビデオが話題を呼び、様々なメディアから早々と取り上げられるなど、現在大きな注目を集めている。

　今年夏にリリース予定のデビューEP『Screenluv』は、ミレニアル世代の視点で描かれた恋愛についての曲が詰まった作品であり、スクリーンを介して行われる他者との距離感や虚しさが、楽曲やミュージックビデオを通して表現されている。

　そして、AMAは今月、最新シングル「Crystal」をリリース。今後の活躍への期待も高まるなか、デビューEPのテーマや彼女の目指すアーティスト像などについて本人に話を聞いた。

＿＿音楽活動を始めることになったきっかけについて教えてください。

ずっと音楽が好きで、小さい頃から歌手になることを夢見ていました。大人になるにつれて、自己表現の方法として曲を作ったり、それをレコーディングしたり、できた曲をSoundCloudにアップしたりしていたら、そこから素晴らしい機会にもめぐりあえて、自分の好きなことをもっとやってみたいという気持ちに拍車がかかったんです。すると次第に勉強への興味も薄れていってしまって。それ以外のことはあまりやりたくないということは、もう、明らかでした。

＿＿ウェスト・ロンドン出身だそうですが、そうした地域特有の環境やバックグラウンドは現在の音楽活動に影響を与えていますか。もしそうなら、どのような影響でしょうか。

その影響はあると思います。ロンドンは、クリエイティブで多様性のある街だから、無意識に自分を表現したり、やりたいことをやるということに対して、オープンになれていたりするのかもしれません。

＿＿所属レーベルでもある〈Dirty Hit〉では、あなたをはじめ、BeabadoobeeやOscar Langなど、10代のアーティストの活躍が目立ちます。アーティストとして活動するとき、若いアーティストであることのメリットやデメリットがあれば教えてください。

若いアーティストのメリットは、あまり大きな責任を持たなくてもいいということだと思います。例えば、私はまだ19歳で、母親と一緒に住んでいるし、電気代やガス代のような公共料金も払わなくてもよくて、ましてや養わなきゃいけない子供もいないし、縛られるものがあまりありません。だから、夢を追うならまさに今しかない、ということですね（笑）。

＿＿昨年11月にリリースされた「Monochrome」のミュージックビデオは、結婚式がテーマになっていますが、どうしてこのようなテーマを選んだのですか。

「Monochrome」のミュージックビデオのテーマは、愛の祝福です。それは世界で最も大切なことだと思うんです。映像用に自分の好きなヴィジュアルをいくつか持って行ったのですが、監督のArnaudがそれにストーリー性を持たせてくれました。

＿＿このミュージックビデオの監督は、A$AP Rocky、Kali Uchis、Kanye West、M.I.A.などを手がけたフランスの映像制作会社、Division ParisのメンバーであるArnaud Bressonが制作していますが、このコラボレーションのいきさつを教えてください。また、今後コラボレーションをしてみたいアーティストがいれば教えてください。

Division Parisは、今最も素晴らしいと言える数々のミュージックビデオを制作しているようなチームです。私は彼らの作品をずっとリスペクトしていました。私はいつも、夢はできるだけ大きく、その結果がどうであれ、それは小さい夢を持つことよりもよっぽどいいと自分に言い聞かせているんです。だから今回も夢を大きく持って彼らに声をかけてみました。そうしたら、なんと、快諾してもらえたんです。

私が今、コラボレーションしてみたいアーティストは、Kelela。彼女の音楽は本当に素晴らしいと思うし、彼女は私のお気に入りの女性のR&Bアーティストの中の一人でもあります。彼女の音楽はとにかく本当に新鮮。あとは、Beyoncéとも共演できたら最高。それと、Pharrell Williamsも。コラボレーションすることができたら光栄な才能のある人はたくさんいますね。

＿＿『The Fader』によれば、「Slip」は「自分の幸福の主導権を握って、最高の自分になるための邪魔を誰にも何にもさせない」といったことについての歌とのことですが、このようなテーマの曲を作ろうと思ったきっかけは何ですか。

たしかそのとき、曲が頭の中にずっと流れていて、すごくポジティヴで本当に気分がよかったから、できるだけそのエネルギーを保っていたいと思ったんです。曲の根幹部分はほぼフリースタイルでできたもので、そこからプロデューサーのCourageと一緒に数時間で一気に完成させました。

＿＿今夏にリリース予定のデビューEP『Screenluv』のテーマについて教えてください。

一言で説明すると、「ミレニアル視点のラヴ・ソング」。「Screenluv」というタイトルほど、クレイジーでコンセプチュアルというわけではないかもしれません（笑）。でもその言葉は、曲を作っていたときに自分の頭の中で考えていたことをよく表していて、スマートフォンに夢中になっていると同時にそれを嫌っている自分や、でもそれが自分の愛する人たちとコミュニケーションを取るときの主なツールに実際になっていること、そしてそれらすべては、間接的であっても、曲作りに影響を与えていると思います。

＿＿EPにも収録されている「Real」のミュージックビデオが公開されています。これまでのミュージックビデオとは違って、ミニマルな印象を受けますが、制作の段階で監督のWill Reidとはどのようなアイデアのやりとりを行いましたか。

「Real」のミュージックビデオは、パーソナルでダイレクトなものにしたかったんです。なぜなら、「Real」は、まさにそういう曲だから。自分の愛する人が作っている壁を壊して、その人に自分のことを信じていいし、そばにいるからと伝えることについて歌っています。だから、それは映像にも反映されていて、アグレッシヴな腕の動きはその壁を壊そうとしているからだし、（フェイクの）ガラスの上に寝そべっているのは、その壁を突破することに疲れているからなんです。

＿＿2018年の『i-D』のインタビューで、“One thing that inspires me is seeing females kill the game”（成功している女性の姿にインスピレーションを受ける）と語っていますが、アーティストとしての成功とは具体的にどのようなものだと考えていますか。例えば、目指している女性のアーティスト像はありますか。

私にとってのアーティストの成功とは、堂々と自分らしくしていて、自分のやりたいことを誰にも邪魔させずやってのけている人のこと。そういう人たちを見ていると、本当に心の底から力が湧いてきます。例えば、Sevdaliza、Sia、Solange、Rihannaといったアーティストたち。特に、Rihannaにいたっては、今何も作品をリリースしていないにも関わらず、いまだに成功者として圧倒的な存在感を放っていますよね。

＿＿あなたは、モデルとしても活動していますが、音楽に限らず、表現者として一番伝えたいと思っていることは何ですか。

クールな機会としてモデルをやるとか、ちょっとした小銭稼ぎとしてモデルをやるのはいいのですが、その仕事に愛を持ってやっているとか、音楽のように自分の強みだとは言い切れないかもしれません。なぜならやっぱり、間違いなく自分を表現するときに、一番情熱を持ってやっていることは、曲を書いたり、メロディを考えたりすることなんです。だから、今回の新曲を全部ライブで披露するのも、とにかくもう、待ちきれないくらい。

でも、クールなモデルの経験をさせてもらえる機会があれば、引き受けるかもしれません。だってもしかしたら、Virgil Abloh（ヴァージル・アブロー）が、彼の次のランウェイで女性のアーティストを起用したいってなるかもしれないじゃないですか（笑）。

＿＿First of all, what made you want to pursue a career in music?

I’ve always loved music and when I was younger I always dreamed of becoming a singer. As I got older I started using writing as a form of self expression and recording things and posting them on Soundcloud, a few opportunities were coming from the songs I had posted online and that fired me up even more to pursue what I love…I was also becoming lesser and lesser interested in my studies and it was clear that I didn’t really want to do anything else.

＿＿Being from West London, did your background and the environment there have an effect on your music career? If so, how?

I guess so, being from London it’s such a creative and diverse environment so I guess subconsciously it has made me feel more free to express myself and just do my own thing.

＿＿The label, 〈Dirty Hit〉 support artists in their teens like yourself, Beabadoobee, and Oscar Lang. What do you think are some pros and cons about being a young artist?

I think a pro to being a young artist is that you don’t really have so much responsibility, like I’m 19 I still live with my mum, I don’t have utility bills to pay, I don’t have children to feed or really anything that could seriously tie me down. So when else really is a better time to chase your dreams ahaha!

＿＿You’ve released a music video for Monochrome last November. Why did
you decide on the wedding theme for the video?

Well, the video was all about a celebration of love, which really is probably the most important thing in the world. I had some visual references of things that I liked for the video and the director Arnaud really helped bring the story aspect of it to life.

＿＿The video was directed by Arnaud Bresson from the French production company, Division Paris who’s known for directing videos for A$AP Rocky, Kali Uchis, M.I.A., and Kanye West. How did the two of you get together to work on the video? Are there any artists that you want to collaborate in the future?

Well, for a long time I have respected division’s work, they have created some of the best music videos in today’s age. I always tell myself to dream as big as possible and whatever the outcome is it’ll be better then if you were dreaming small, so I dreamed big we reached out to them and they were down! An artist I would love to collaborate with Kelela I think her music is AMAZING and she is definitely one of my favourite females in rnb today! Her music is really just super refreshing, Beyoncé would also be crazyy, pharrell there are so many talented people out there that it would be a privilege to collaborate with.

＿＿According to The Fader, Slip is about ” taking control of your own happiness and not allowing anybody or anything to get in the way of trying to be the best version of you”. What made you want to write a song featuring this theme?

Well, I think it was just what was playing on my head at the time, like I was feeling really good and positive so I just wanted to maintain that energy for as long as possible. The core of the song was pretty much freestyled and me and the producer Courage made everything there and then in a few hours.

＿＿What’s the theme for your debut EP, Screenluv that’s being released this summer?

In a sentence I would describe it as love songs from a millennial perspective. It may not be as crazy and conceptual as the title may sound ahaha, I just felt it was a word that summed up the headspace that I was in when I made the music, me being addicted to my phone but hating it at the same time, it being one of my main means of communication with the people I love, and I think that all indirectly effected the writing.

＿＿Your music video for ‘Real’ is out, and it comes across as being much more minimalistic than your other videos. What were some ideas you discussed with the director Will Reid?

Well, for the video I just wanted it to feel very personal and direct, because the song is. It’s about trying to break down that barrier that the person you love has up and letting them know they can trust you and you’re there. So the ideas all really reflected the song, hence all of the aggressive arm movements because you’re trying to knock down that wall, or the shot laying in the (fake) glass because of being exhausted trying to break through.

＿＿In an interview with i-D in 2018, you said that “One thing that inspires me is seeing females kill the game.” What does it specifically mean to kill the game as an artist? Are there any female artists that you look up to?

To me killing the game is just being unapologetically yourself and not letting anybody hinder what you want to do. Like that is sooooooooooooooooooo empowering. A prime example of that would be artists like Sevdaliza, Sia, Solange, Rihanna even though we’re not being blessed with her music right now she’s still killing the game.

＿＿You also work as a model. This question isn’t limited only to music, but what do you wish most to express as a performer?

I would more just do modeling for if a cool opportunity came up or to make some quick coins but I wouldn’t say I had a love for it or it’s my forte like music. Writing and coming up with melodies is definitely what I am most passionate about when it comes to expressing myself. I am also super excited to start doing live performances with all of this new music! But if a cool modeling opportunity comes up maybe I‘ll do it lol, who knows maybe Virgil will want some female artists walking in his next runway.
